HSPH Dean Julio Frenk , on his inaugural trip to India, delivered the introductory remarks, stressing the importance of the organization of healthcare systems in determining the trajectory of economic growth. Other participating faculty included David Bloom, Professor of Economics and Demography, HSPH; David Hunter, Dean of Academic Affairs, HSPH; S.V. Subramanian, Professor of Population Health and Geography, HSPH; and Kasisomayajula Viswanath, Associate Professor of Society, Human Development and Health, HSPH. Additional panelists included Prakash Gupta, Director, Healis Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health and Swati Piramal, Director, Piramal Healthcare. Conference participants sat in the newly inaugurated Taj Lands’ End “Classroom,” created in the style of a Harvard Business School room. This space will be the site of future SAI events.

SUMMER OPPORTUNTIES WITH SWANITI INITIATIVE

Opportunities for graduate students to participate in fellowship programs in Uluberia, West Bengal to diagnose issues in electricity supply in the rural interiors of India and Shimla, Himachal Pradesh to develop a labor-market strategy that would enhance the existing labor market skill set and create a favorable macroeconomic environment for industry.

HARVARD PRESIDENT VISITS INDIA

Drew Gilpin Faust, President, Harvard University and Lincoln Professor of History, visited India in January for the first time. The South Asia Initiative held a conference on Higher Education in South Asia during her visit, and we are pleased that she delivered the welcome remarks to kick off the January 23, 2012, event.

Prof. Venkatesh N. Murthy will be teaching the Harvard Summer Program in Bangalore, India: Bangalore Science Initiative.

This unique summer experience allows students to combine cultural immersion in India with sophisticated scientific research. Students conduct supervised research in quantitative life sciences—including chemical biology and biophysics—in a host laboratory. Participating laboratories are chosen from a large set based on the individual student's interests and the specific direction of the course.

Pakistan

SAI is pleased to announce a summer school opportunity for students at the School for Law & Policy in Lahore, Pakistan.

The Summer Program for Foreign Students is designed for foreign, English-speaking, under-graduate, graduate, and postgraduate students interested in learning about Islamic law, Pakistan, and Urdu.
The program will offer foreign students a unique opportunity to learn about the political and cultural challenges and problems confronting Islam and Pakistan. Their faculty and speakers will offer in-depth analyses of the major issues and will provide a platform for open discussions resulting in solutions and strategies.

Harvard Alumni Series: Talk on Challenges to Policing in Pakistan 

On 31 October 2011, a group of Harvard alumni hosted a talk, titled “Challenges to Policing in Pakistan,” at Center for Law and Policy, Lahore, Pakistan. The speaker was Sarmad Saeed Khan, Additional Inspector General, Police Service of Pakistan, who has a vast experience of performing police duties in Pakistan and abroad, and is well respected for his relentless efforts for the development of an efficient police force in the country.

Bangladesh


Ms. Ferdous Ara Begum, Harvard Kennedy School alumna, with her niece, joined Maria May , Faculty of Arts and Sciences alumna and SAI Coordinator, and Alayne Adams, Harvard School of Public Health alumna at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka.

 

In early March, members of Dhaka’s Harvard community met at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka. Shazzad Hoshen Khan, an emerging Bengali artist, was present to discuss his work on exhibition. Attendants included Ms. Ferdous Begum, former Director General for Bangladesh TV and several alumni working in development.

SAI Associate Director Meena Hewett traveled to Bangladesh in January, 2012. She spoke at a Harvard Alumni Club Event on Friday, January 20, 2012, along with the Chief Guest of the gathering, Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, Advisor to the Honourable Prime Minister.
